\u201cOne trend among private equity-backed groups is centralizing practice management systems,\u201d said Leslie Soto, VP of operations at Five Point Dental Specialists<\/a>. \u201cYou need to have data at your fingertips. We\u2019re consolidating from seventeen different practice management systems to Denticon<\/a> and Cloud 9<\/a> software.\u201d 
 
With so many DSOs navigating mergers and platform consolidation, implementation is only part of the challenge. Communication is just as critical: \u201cWhenever you introduce new technology, you need to ensure everyone understands why the change is important and how it will make their jobs easier\u2014including the doctors,\u201d Soto added. 
 
Technology is also changing how DSOs document processes and train teams. \u201cInstead of one playbook that\u2019s printed, you might have QR codes to scan that will take you to the most up-to-date user instructions,\u201d Soto explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI, Automation, and the Path to Scale <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Josh Gwinn, CEO of Optimize Practice Alliance<\/a>, sees AI<\/a> and automation as must-haves for dental groups ready to scale. 
 
\u201cThe biggest trend right now is navigating the new world of technology for AI and automation,\u201d Gwinn said. \u201cBill.com, QuickBooks, Sage, accounting software and more companies are adding automation to accounts receivable workflows. Zentist<\/a> and other companies have added AI to revenue cycle management (RCM<\/a>) workflows to automate repetitive tasks. The key for dental groups looking to scale is to implement technology early.\u201d 
 
How people want to receive information has changed: \u201cPeople aren\u2019t just using Google anymore. They\u2019re using ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools,\u201d Gwinn said. \u201cAI receptionists are a hot trend, but so far, the public\u2019s response has been lukewarm.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evolving Leadership and Mindsets in Dentistry <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

New talent from outside dentistry is reshaping how DSOs operate\u2014especially in roles focused on operations and patient experience.\u00a0

\u201cWe recently hired a COO from the pharmacy sector,\u201d said Ancy Verdier, DMD, partner at Bedi Dental Group<\/a>. \u201cIt underscores the importance of financial analytics, insurance navigation, customer experience, and operational efficiency<\/a> in modern dental organizations.\u201d\u00a0

There\u2019s also a shift happening among clinicians: more dentists are thinking like entrepreneurs.\u00a0\u201cI sit on the Board of Trustees at Tufts University, and there\u2019s a growing recognition that dental grads need to be good at business,\u201d said Verdier. \u201cI\u2019m seeing more dentists getting their MBAs.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Frontiers in Patient Engagement <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, DSOs are innovating how they reach patients and deliver care. “More practices are advertising the benefits of dental implants and other solutions to drive consumer awareness and consultations,\u201d said Soto. \u201cThat\u2019s a shift from relying solely on referrals to more direct-to-consumer marketing.\u201d 
 
Meanwhile, clinical innovation<\/a> continues to expand possibilities. \u201cI\u2019m particularly excited about advancements in tooth regeneration, with innovations like Curedont paving the way for the future of regenerative dentistry,\u201d said Verdier. \u201cThese breakthroughs have the potential to redefine patient care<\/a> and long-term oral health outcomes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
